A man has been arrested while attempting to stab Mali’s interim president, Colonel Assimi Goita while morning prayers were going on at the Grand mosque in Bamako which was part of the Eid Al-Adha celebration this morning. The man armed with a knife attempted to attack the interim president from behind shortly after the presiding Imam had just finished his sermon and was taking the prayers.
Acccording to reports, one person was said to have been wounded at the scene of the incident by the assailant as the interim president was quickly moved from the building as he sustained no visible injuries. The country’s religious affairs minister confirmed this to reporters that a man “tried to kill the president with a knife” but was detained by security officers before he could reach the interim leader.
Mali has been under President Goita’s administration after the country experienced two coups in nine months during the past year, with the transitional president sworn in May 2021. The 37-year-old transitional ruler previously served as the country’s vice president but engaged in a power grab after he wasn’t consulted over a cabinet reshuffle.
